When the war was over, the breed regained the old name again. In Britain, the name was changed to the Alsatian. The original name was reinstated in 1979. Nowadays, the breed is actually known under both these names.

Perspective adopters should prove they are ready for responsible ownership. To become an owner of a dog, one has to fill in a questionnaire and have a home visit of a volunteer who makes sure that the person can become the right owner for a dog.
