At the end of WW2, Berlin was split in two, the rest of the country was divided into the eastern and western zones; Berlin was located far into the interior of communist East Germany. East Germany and East Berlin remained under Russian and communist control until 1989 and 1990. During the first 40 years of separation of East and West Germany, there were two different breeds - the east and west breeds. They began to follow their own different paths out of necessity and circumstance.

It’s not easy to train these smart and agile dogs. They require vigorous activities and are not suited for the role of an indoor pet. Dogs of this breed are famous for their intelligence. They are able to learn a task in 2 to 10 repetitions. Adult working dogs can make their own decisions in emergencies and save people’s lives. Training a dog of this breed means keeping it physically and mentally fit. Training sessions should be interesting and challenging; only in this case the results will be impressive.
