The dog originated in Germany that is evident by its name. As the dog was very intelligent, it was used in many different spheres. Thus during the World War I, there were 48,000 dogs enlisted in the army of Germany. Later the name of the dog was changed to Alsatian, because nobody wanted to be associated with Germany. That actually saved the breed from extinction. However, now with the war long over, the breed's name changed again and the dog became one of the world's most widely recognized breeds.
